Why low-voltage cabling costs more than you think it should, and why we rarely give you a fixed labor price
Here’s a number for you: 116 cables. 86 drops. One house. $11,000 in labor.
That’s a real project. A recent one. And when that number came across my desk, I had the exact same reaction you probably just had reading it.
I’ve been doing this for over twenty years. I’ve run the numbers on more jobs than I can count. And I still stop, stare at the labor total, and think: that seems like a lot for wires in a wall. Then I break it down, walk through every run and every obstacle, and realize the same thing I always do. If anything, the number is a little light.
That still surprises me. And I think it’s worth talking about.
It’s Just Wire
Here’s what I hear on a regular basis: “It’s just two speaker wires.” “It’s just a data cable.” “It’s just some Cat 6.” “It’s just a few TVs.” “It’s just some shades.”
I don’t say this to be dismissive. I say it because I understand it completely.
You look at a house and you don’t automatically think, “I can build that.” You look under the hood of a car and you don’t say, “I can take that apart and put it back together, no problem.” You open an electrical panel and most people back away slowly. That’s not a knock on anyone. Building a house is easy if it’s what you do for a living. Running a panel is second nature if you’re a licensed electrician. I have some basic wiring knowledge and a rough feel for framing. But if you asked me to wire your panel, I’d probably get fried in the process. And if I built your house, there’s a real chance it would fall on you. It’s not what I do for a living.
But when it comes to wires in a wall, it always feels like it should be simple. And there’s a reason for that. You can’t see the work. By the time we’re done, the walls are closed, the cables are hidden, and everything just works. The work is invisible. And invisible work is easy to undervalue.
The Project
The sticker shock is valid. So is the sticker. I’ve done this long enough that I can tell you exactly where every dollar is accounted for.
We were called in by a contractor we’ve worked with for many years, for a beautiful addition to an existing structure. Everything was moving along on the build side. Then, at the last minute, the architect, the contractor, and the homeowner all looked up and said, “What about the low-voltage?”
In a perfect world, we get called in early, ideally before the walls go up, especially when a homeowner wants more than basic Wi-Fi and a couple of speakers. Too often we’re the last call, or we’re forgotten entirely. The reason is exactly what I described above. It’s just wire. We’ll figure it out later.
Later, in this case, was the same week they had insulation scheduled.
There wasn’t time to put together a full package from rough-in to turnover. So I recommended we phase it: infrastructure first. Pull everything they knew they wanted and some of what they thought they might want, including security, cameras, speakers, TVs, data points, and Wi-Fi access points. Lock in the cables while the walls were still open. Equipment decisions could come later.

What’s Between A and B
Most people picture a straight line from one side of the room to the other. Run the cable, done.
But it’s never that simple, and it can’t be.
By the time we arrive on a job site, the electrical is in place. The HVAC is in. The plumbing is in. That’s not an accident. All of those trades are governed by building code. Low-voltage is not. So we work around them. That’s just how it works, and it’s how it should work. You make friends, not enemies.
But working around them means that a straight-line 60-foot run from Point A to Point B might actually be 120 feet by the time you account for everything in the way. And you won’t know that until your feet are on the ground.
Beyond the routing, there’s a required minimum separation between low-voltage cables and line voltage electrical cables. This exists because without it, you get interference. A friend of mine used to say prior preparation prevents piss poor performance. This is one of the areas where that rings the truest. Interference is something you cannot see, you cannot hear, and you don’t know is present until it’s too late. When low-voltage cables are haphazardly installed, you are a ticking time bomb waiting for it. It’s not a question of if. It’s when, and how bad.
Picture this. You’re in your new home. You’re streaming the game. Your wife turns on the microwave. The stream buffers. You miss the touchdown. You try it again. Same thing. Every time the microwave kicks on, the Internet stops working.
You could move the microwave to a different circuit. But why should you have to do that in your brand-new home?
The answer is that the cables were run from Point A to Point B, and not much thought was given to what happened in between. What lives between Point A and Point B often determines the experience at both ends.
The Job I’ll Never Forget
Years ago, when I was still an employee, we got called out to a small renovation. The contractor said it was ready for us. We showed up and nothing was done. No cans, no electrical, nothing in place. We called the office and said we should wait. We were told to pull our cables and keep moving.
So we did. We talked to the electrician, told him to stay clear of our runs. Our manager called the general contractor. The general contractor was supposed to let us know before sheetrock went up so we could inspect.
Nine months later, the job showed back up on the schedule. No one had called. We went in and installed everything. It all worked. We walked out feeling good about it.
The next day we got a call. The picture was breaking up.
Long story short, there was one specific light switch. Flip it on, and the interference it generated in the HDMI cable was enough to kill the HD signal. It would pass 480. It would not pass high definition. We tried every workaround we could think of. That job was never right.
Not because anyone was careless on purpose. But because we pulled cables before the conditions were right, and nobody caught it before the walls closed. By the time we knew, there was nothing clean left to do about it.
The Work We Follow Behind
I can’t tell you how many times we’ve followed behind a job where a homeowner got our price, was taken back by it, and decided to have their electrician or a friend pull the cables instead. I completely understand that call.
But then we show up to do the finish work and we find five TVs on daisy-chained coax, each one looping to the next around the room. Or eight rooms of speakers on one wire that loops through every location in the house. That’s not a speaker system. That’s one circuit in a loop.
The hard part isn’t the work. It’s telling that homeowner that what they were expecting isn’t possible, and that they paid someone to prepare this for them.
Why We Don’t Give Fixed Labor Prices
So how do you price a job when you don’t know what you’ll find inside the walls?
We use what we call not-to-exceed pricing. It’s a budgetary range, and we use it from conceptual design all the way through the final estimate. The project I mentioned had a range of $9,500 to $13,000. The low end assumes things go smoothly and we can move efficiently. The high end is there for everything we can’t see on a set of plans: the fireplaces to pull around, the steel beams to route through, the runs that look like 60 feet on paper and turn into 120 in the field.
Our goal is always to come in on the low end. But we’re not chasing the low end at the expense of the installation. A clean cable is not the same thing as a cable that made it from one end of the house to the other. A clean installation is one that will still be performing well in fifteen years.
The range isn’t there to confuse you or get extra money out of you. I know we’ve been accused of both. The range is there because even on the most perfect day you can imagine, with ideal weather and every minute planned out, you can still blow a tire five miles down the road. Then you spill your coffee. Then you drop your phone and a car runs over it.
There are things outside of our control. Our job is to manage everything inside of it, and handle the things outside of it without making them your problem.
What You’re Really Paying For
More often than not, the cost you don’t understand, when you’re working with people who take their work seriously, is there to cover the details you don’t understand. Which is precisely why you hired someone in the first place.
You’ll never see that we maintained proper separation from the electrical. You’ll never know that we routed around the HVAC trunk instead of crossing it. You won’t notice that the cable we pulled was exactly right for that run, not just whatever was left on the truck.
But you will notice if we didn’t.
Eventually, you always do. And by then, the money you saved will look a lot different than it did the day you made that call.
